These three Jewish bakeries are ready for Rosh Hashanah and the High Holy Days
The High Holy Days start on Sunday with Rosh Hashanah, a time for family, friends, and special foods like sweet honey cakes. Then, during Hanukkah and Passover, people eat crispy potato latkes and matzah balls.

The Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah, is a time for new beginnings and wishing for a good year. This is shown in foods like honey cakes, walnut cakes in sweet syrup, and different kinds of challah.
Challah is a type of bread that has been around since the 15th century. It represents the presence of God at the table. It also stands for the manna that fell from heaven when the ancient Israelites were wandering in the desert. The round shape of the bread is a sign of how the year goes around.
For weeks, bakeries all over the Garden State have been getting ready for Rosh Hashanah. We tell you about three of them.
Liv Breads, Millburn
Elana and Yaniv Livneh, along with baker Bary Yogev, own Liv Breads. For the past four years, they have sold bread and other baked goods to the people of Millburn.
Elana Livneh said, "We love being a part of this unique place in Millburn." "Especially at this time of year, when we all celebrate different holidays. There are special breads and dishes for each of these holidays."
Elana and her team have been baking for Rosh Hashanah for weeks. They have made over 1,000 loaves of challah and hundreds of honey cakes and apple cakes.
Livneh said, "We've been baking day and night for the past few weeks." "We usually bake a variety of breads and cakes, but at this time of year, we mostly bake honey cakes, apple cakes, and honey challah in three versions: plain, with raisins, and for a special occasion."
Elana and Yaniv used to work in the business world. Then they decided to try something new and open a bakery. Yogev, who had been baking for 20 years, joined forces with them to start Liv Breads.
Livneh said, "Our neighbours in Millburn have accepted us in a big way." "We were taking more than 100 orders a day even when the pandemic hit. People in our area love our bread."
